But a few hours up the road lie the Mayan Ruins that are right on the Mayan Riviera, known as Tulum. Located right on the Caribbean coastline, you’re looking at a pre-Columbian ancient Mayan city set up like a fortress surrounded by walls protecting it from outside invaders.

As you visit, take the shuttle from the parking lot to the site’s entrance; the most famous structures remaining are the Temple of the Frescoes and El Castillo, which translates to The Castle. And last but not least, it would be the Temple of the Descending God.

There is a steady supply of tour buses departing from the Cancun resort, or you can book directly through Vacancy Rewards, so there is no need to rent a car unless you wish to explore on your own.

These ruins date back to AD 564, located in the state of Quintana Roo.
